I haven’t practiced Yoga for a while, so this morning I left home early to join class. The room was packed. Three students who came later actually got turned away due to limited space. That could have been me had I arrived at my usual time. I felt so lucky this morning to have the opportunity to practice. We did reverse plank, tabletop, weight switcher, twists, triangular pose, plank, child pose, mountain pose, etc. My mind was clear, and my … Continue reading >>
We were back to Bosu ball. Instead of using dumbbells with it, we used a towel. We did lateral step over, sit-up while holding the towel with both hands, lunge with the towel under one foot, mountain climber with the towel under one foot, toe tap, heel tap, burpee, pushup, butt lift, etc. I was really tired but my muscles weren’t so sore as last time. … Continue reading >>
1-22-2014 Today we did a variation of the Tree pose in Yoga class. You pull one leg up, and you have the opposite hand hold the top of your foot with knee pointing downward, then you raise the opposite arm straight up over your head. I could stay balanced this way for 1+ minute each side. You could stop here with this pose or continue with the raised arm bending forward while you lower your buttock. Finally your raised arm … Continue reading >>
Half of January has flown by already, and I just had my very first swim lesson for the year. Adventurer Jr. II taught me “two-hand touch” followed by push-off so that I can make turns and continue swimming. I swam the width of the pool and practiced that the entire hour. … Continue reading >>
I did basic leg blocks, middle blocks, figure eight, and butterfly. I’m a little rusty since I haven’t touched a staff for a while. I also worked on leg block with front stance twice each side while moving forward, and leg blocks with back stance twice each side while moving backward. Last, I reviewed the first half of the staff form.
1-16-2014 We did our workouts with a stepper. We did rollups, mountain climber, sit ups, push ups, reverse push ups, jumping jack, toe tap, burpee, plank, reverse plank, squats, and butt kicking. It’s a strenuous exercise and I was so tired afterward. I wonder what equipment we will be using next time.
1-15-2014 I learned something new today. Ananda Balasana (happy baby pose). This pose is about elongating the spine as long as possible and touching the mat with flat back as much as possible. This pose focuses on the lower back of your body and the pubic bones need to open out wide. I recall my kids did this pose when they were babies and they looked happy while doing it. Now I’m consciously recreating it and loving it. It made … Continue reading >>
1-14-2014 Today’s theme was working with Bosu ball and dumbbells. The dumbbells I picked have number 3 on them. I assume it’s 3 kg or 6.6 lbs. I think they are good for starters like me. We did forearm plank, mountain climber, scissor plank, sit ups with the ball under your back, traveling push ups with one hand on the ball, two handed push ups with both hands on the ball, forward lunge with one foot on the ball, squats, burpee, … Continue reading >>
Today, I practiced Dandasana (staff pose), Baddha Konasana (bound angle pose), frog pose, Adho Mukha Svanasana (down dog), Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (up dog), high lunges, frog on back, Tadasana (mountain pose), Virabhadrasana (warrior poses), and Trikonasana (triangular pose). The work is mental as well. The hard part is to let it go, let it be, surrender, follow your body and to explore what it can do. I felt relaxed and rejuvenated afterward. It was a good way to start out … Continue reading >>
Today, I practiced the basics of escrima staff. I practiced head strikes, body strikes, and leg strikes, as well as the blocks for each one. An important tip is that every block is a strike in itself. Also, when striking, aim at your opponent, not the weapon. Moving around can also increase the difficulty.
